2011-2012 Season

Henry V

September 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, & 11

Directed by Ronald L. Murphy, Jr.

This stripped-down staging of Shakespeare's popular history is filled with political intrigue, fierce battles, and some of Shakespeare's most soaring and beautiful language. The modern dress production conveys the universal military ordeal facing anyone in combat (it is set after the terrorist attacks of 9/11), but the language is still Shakespeare's. Henry V stands as one of the most profound and personal meditations on the weight of power ever written. Explore the brutally thoughtful, fiercely funny, belligerent diplomacy of King Henry V with this timeless coming of age tale. You will truly become part of this band of brothers -- “We few, we happy few.”

(It had been announced that we were opening our 2011-2012 Season with Anne Nelson's The Guys. However, due to licensing restrictions we are unable to perform this play at this particular time. Henry V will be presented in its place.)

Seven Nuns at Las Vegas

October 21, 22, 23, 28 , 29, & 30

Directed by Katrina Kayden
When it snows on a May Day in Indiana, Sister Columba, an elderly rheumatic nun, asks St. Joseph to take her where the weather is warm. St. Joseph takes her, the convent, and six other nuns who happen to be in the convent at the moment, to the warm sands of Nevada—just outside of Las Vegas. Las Vegas is a shock to the nuns and to St. Joseph, and the nuns and St. Joseph have a startling effect on Las Vegas. This bustling resort town gives up gambling and takes up contemplation; the Bible becomes a best seller; a mission priest is the rage of the nightclub crowd; and three dancing girls from the Silver Dollar, Peaches, Boots, and Baby, decide to take the veil. But, the nuns have their problems too. There is real-estate difficulty; they own the convent but not the ground; the younger nuns thumb rides to town; Peaches, Boots, and Baby teach one of the sisters a dance routine; and, finally, the sister in charge finds herself offering to “place a small bet.” St. Joseph and the nuns realize they had better go home, so St. Joseph returns the convent and its occupants to Indiana—the occupants at the moment including the proprietor of the Silver Dollar and the board of directors of the Amalgamated Night Clubs. Written by Natalie E. White.

The Jimmy Stewart Mystery

December 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, & 18 Directed by B. Johns
In the tradition of the classic “Choose Your Own Adventure” book series, The Jimmy Stewart Mystery is an original comedy in which the audience is invited to participate in the action as it unfolds by choosing what characters on the stage should do at a number of key moments. It is Christmas Eve in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and all is quiet. That is, until it is discovered that our town’s beloved Jimmy Stewart statue has been stolen right off its pedestal on the courthouse lawn. Hijinks ensue as a few concerned citizens and their children join the police in a hunt for the statue, racing to get it back up before Christmas morning. Two Santa Clauses in a vicious showdown for reindeer dominance, a mysterious gorilla with a ferocious appetite for candy canes, and the evil Mercersburg Historical Revisionist Society all have potential appearances in this zany play. Will the statue be returned? It’s up to you to decide! Written by B. Johns.

My Three Angels

March 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, & 25

Directed by Mary Jo Bowes

A warm and witty comedy about three work release convicts in French Guiana, a region where on Christmas day the temperature has graciously dropped to 104 degrees. Three convicts are employed as roofers by a family, whose roof is in desperate need of maintenance. On the way from France is an evil-minded cousin to oust the father of the family from his business, and his cold-blooded nephew, who is jilting the father’s daughter for an heiress. The three convicts—two of them murderers, the third a swindler—take on the visitors. All three have warm hearts and are passionate believers in true justice. Possessing every criminal art and penal grace, they set matters right and, in doing so, redeem themselves as real life angels to the grateful family. This is the Broadway hit that became the movie We’re No Angels staring Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Joan Bennett.”. Written by Samuel and Bella Spewack.

Based on the classic, beloved American novel by Mark Twain, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer tells the story of young Tom and his uproarious adventures, ranging from the famous whitewashing scene to the discovery of hidden treasure, the rescue of Becky Thatcher, and the sad demise of Joe.
